Typical Teak

Nilambur teak is globally known for its superior quality and elegant and aesthetic appearance. Being one of the world’s most sought after woods, its unique features like large size, durability, and distinctive colour make it the most loved wood in the global wood market.
Nilambur is considered as the home to the oldest teak plantations in the world called the Conolly’s Plot, named after H. V. Conolly, the British Malabar district collector, who was instrumental in planting teak there. Nilambur was even called the “Mecca of Teak.” According to researches, timbers from Nilambur teak plantations were used for building ships and construction of bridges and buildings during the 19th century. It is said to possess high resistance to fungal decay and also exhibit antioxidant properties.

During the colonial era, the Britishers were drawn to the superior quality of Nilambur teak. Teak logs were transported through the Chaliyar River to Beypore. From the government depot at Beypore they were supplied to the timber industries of Kallayi. From Kallayi and Beypore timbers were exported to different parts of India and abroad. They were exported directly to London and sold at high prices. In fact, the Nilambur-Shoranur Railway line was also laid for transporting these teak logs.
As mentioned earlier, H.V. Conolly initiated the very idea of Teak plantation in this fertile valley. The Conolly Plantation is regarded as the beginning of teak plantations in India. Planted in the 1840s, it is spread across a huge area of 2.31 hectares. The oldest teak tree, Kannimari, is a rare attraction at the Connolly Plot. Ramavarma plantation, set up in 1936, is another famous plantation of teak trees in Nilambur.
